Kitchen renovation companies offer free design services and online cost calculators for a reason. Their most frequently asked question is, “How much does a kitchen reno cost?” There are so many variables, it’s  impossible to give an accurate answer. We can’t give you an answer, either, but if you’re looking for some general advice before you start getting quotes, we can give you some reasonable estimates.

Average Kitchen Renovation Costs*

Average kitchen renovation costs can be misleading because the averages are based on high and low prices paid for a renovation. They do give you a starting point, though. In general, kitchens can be divided into three categories: budget, luxury and ultimate. According to experts, the average cost of a kitchen reno in each of these categories, including all new appliances, installation, plumbing and electrical work is:

  1. Budget: $22,000
  2. Luxury: $34,000
  3. Ultimate: $40,000+

The gap between a budget and luxury kitchen is larger because of the materials and appliances included in the kitchen. Budget kitchens generally have melamine doors, laminate benchtops, standard tiles and lower cost appliances. Luxury and ultimate kitchens will have solid timber, composite stone or granite benchtops. They will have frame and panel or polyurethane spray painted doors and expensive tiles or splashbacks. Owners will also choose the latest European appliances and spend more on their fittings.

Getting More Luxury for Less

As mentioned above, average costs can be misleading. One budget renovation can cost under $10,000 while another can cost $25,000 or more. If you want a luxury kitchen at a budget price, there are a number of things you can do to save on costs:
Choose a flat pack kitchen and do some of the installation work yourself.
Leave your sink and electrical outlets in their current position to save on plumbing and electrical installation costs.

  • Choose stylish acrylic splashbacks instead of expensive wall tiles.
  • Lay vinyl flooring instead of ceramic or porcelain tiles.
  • Keep some of your existing appliances if they are still in good nick.
  • A stylish flat pack kitchen from IKEA can cost less than $3,000. If you remove your old kitchen and hire a kitchen installer to help you, it might cost $1,000 to $2,000 more. Add $40 to $60 per square metre to have vinyl flooring installed and you can have a budget kitchen reno for around six to eight thousand dollars. The price will be higher for a larger kitchen, but even with appliances thrown in, the total cost can be much less than the “average” price of $22,000.

Don’t let the averages scare you. Quality and style doesn’t have to cost more if you choose carefully. If you need help, kitchen designers are trained to show you all your options, not just the most expensive ones. Get quotes, compare them by price and quality and you can have your dream kitchen reno.

My wife and I have been looking into remodeling our kitchen and have never really known the cost. We had no idea that the normal budget was about $22,000. I think that is a pretty fair price for a kitchen remodel.
